We are learning to be "good doctors!" Good doctors and good readers are not afraid to say, "I don't understand yet!" We have learned to NOTICE a problem, so that we can FIX a problem. Good readers and good doctors do not fake understanding!
Field Trip planned for this spring!!! Don't miss it. We will be going on a guided special tour of Franklin Park Zoo with the zoo president! Everyone is invited. Bus will leave just after the start of school and we will return just before the buses roll to take you home. No classes for you that day in May!

We are learning to "monitor for meaning." This means that we check that we understand what we read before we turn the page. We understand that reading takes some work! You have to stop and think quite a bit when you read. Reading is not like standing in the shower, letting water fall all over you. In the shower you don't really have to work too hard to get wet! You have to work to read. Reading is making meaning from the printed word. It takes work. We readers work to make meaning!
Major Big Idea!!!!! - We are learning that reading is much more than decoding. Reading is also figuring out what the author is trying to convey to you and adding your thinking to it. There is NOTHING more important than the reader's thinking. If you are not talking back to the book you are not really reading. You are fake reading.
We are learning that most of the thinking good readers do is invisible. We are making that thinking visible by using post it notes. As a community of readers we are currently reading a selection by Richard Paul Evans titled The Christmas Candle. It sends a big message!
